Braided Cheese Bread
This bread takes a little more work, but the addition of cheddar cheese makes a delicious soft and savory bread.
Ingredients
- 3½ to 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 Tbsp. sugar
- 2¼ tsp. active dry yeast
- 1 tsp. salt
- 1 cup water
- ⅓ cup milk
- 1½ cups (6 oz.) grated sharp cheddar cheese
Directions
In bowl of stand mixer combine 1½ cups flour, sugar, yeast, and salt. Heat water and milk to 120⁰F and add to dry ingredients. Beat for 3 minutes; add enough additional flour to make a soft dough.
Turn out onto a floured surface and knead in cheese, ½ cup at a time, adding additional flour as necessary. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover and let rise until doubled, 1 hour.
Punch dough down and divide into 6 pieces. Roll each piece into a 12-14 inch rope. Braid three ropes together and place on a baking sheet. Repeat with remaining three ropes. Cover and let rise until doubled, 30-45 minutes.
Top with additional shredded cheese, if desired.
Bake at 350⁰F for 20-25 minutes or until lightly browned.
