French Bread

Homemade bread is never quick, but this recipe comes close! With this recipe, it only takes about 2 hours to have a freshly baked loaf of bread on the table to accompany dinner.

Ingredients

  • 2½ to 2¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbsp. sugar
  • 2¼ tsp. active dry yeast
  • 1 cup warm water (120⁰)

Directions

In the bowl of a stand mixer, combine 2 cups flour, salt, sugar, and yeast.  Add water and beat for 3 minutes.  Add enough additional flour to make a soft dough. 

Place dough in a greased bowl, cover and let rise until doubled, 45 minutes.

Punch dough down and roll into a rectangular shape.  Roll up jelly roll style.  Place seam side down on baking sheet, cover and let rise for an additional 30 minutes.

Make 3-4 diagonal slashes on top of loaf.  Bake at 400⁰F for 15-20 minutes.
